What is POTS? (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome)

August 19, 2021 by Noreen Connolly PhD, RN

According to Johns Hopkins (https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/postural-orthostatic-tachycardia-syndrome-pots ) POTS is a blood circulation disorder characterized by two factors:

  • A specific group of symptoms that frequently occur when standing upright.
  • A heart rate increase from horizontal to standing (or as tested on a tilt table) of at least 30 beats per minute in adults, or at least 40 beats per minute in adolescents, measured during the first 10 minutes of standing.

Some symptoms may include:

  • Your heart rate goes up
  • Symptoms are worse with standing
  • Dizziness

This condition can make activities of daily living more difficult and can make exercise more difficult due to the uncomfortable feelings of POTS

IV therapy can sometimes be used to treat POTS in the short term. It can relieve the following symptoms:

  • Lethargy
  • Dizziness
  • Exhaustion
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • High heart rate

What is one way that POTS can be treated?
Normal saline infusion is one treatment for POTS Syndrome; we also recommend a Myers Infusion for POTS patients at the IV Hub in Medford, MA

Why can IV therapy be helpful at the IV bar at The IV Hub in Medford, MA?
The IV fluids bypass the gut and go straight to the bloodstream and work immediately.
